Add and Edit a Question

Add and Edit a Question

Questions are the heart of your survey. In the survey editor, questions sit inside question groups on the canvas — the large working area in the middle of the screen. Every new survey starts with a sample group and question, so you can begin right away. All changes are saved automatically: look for Saved at [time] in the top right. There is no save button.

Add a question

  1. Click on the survey to open it in the survey editor.
  2. Click the purple + button in the top left. This button adds questions, question groups, and logic.
  3. Pick a question type from the picker. You can also search by name.
  4. The new question appears at the end of the current group. Drag it in the Structure sidebar to reposition it.
  5. Click Your question here and type your question text.
  6. Click Optional help description to add help text for participants (optional).

Tip: Need a new question group first? The picker also has + Add question group.

Tip: You can also use the purple + divider between groups on the canvas to add a question at that exact spot.

Note: While a survey is active, the + button is disabled — you cannot add questions or groups. To change the structure you must deactivate the survey first (the green Activate button shows as a red Deactivate button on an active survey).

Edit a question

You edit questions directly on the canvas — click any text and start typing. While you type, a floating toolbar appears with alignment, B (bold), I (italic), and link options.

For everything else, use the Question settings panel on the right, which opens when you add or select a question. It has a Simple / Advanced toggle. Key settings include:

  • Question code — the internal ID (for example Q001), used in exports and logic.
  • Type — change the question type from a dropdown.
  • Mandatory — set to On, Soft, or Off.
  • Show in statistics — a dropdown that sets how the question appears in statistics (default Bar chart).
  • Add image — drop an image into the question.
  • Condition designer — show the question only when a condition is met.

Some question types (for example multiple choice) use subquestions. Click + Add subquestion to add one, or click the X icon next to a subquestion to remove it.

Delete or copy a question

Each question card on the canvas has two icons in its bottom-right corner:

  • Copy — duplicates the question.
  • Trash — deletes the question. A Delete question dialog asks "Are you sure you want to delete this question? This action cannot be reverted." — click Delete to confirm or Cancel.

Using the classic editor?

If your installation still uses the classic admin interface:

  1. To add a question, click the Structure tab and select + Add question — or select a group and choose Add new question to group. The question opens in edit mode; make your changes and click Save.
  2. To edit a question, click the Structure tab, click the question, click Edit, then make your edits and Save.

Note: in the classic editor you must create a question group before you can add questions.
