How do I create a survey?

About creating a survey

You create surveys from your workspace, the screen you land on after logging in. A new survey opens in the editor right away with a welcome screen, one question group with a sample question, and an end screen. There is no form to fill in first. You name the survey and set its basics afterwards, and everything you change is saved automatically.

Create a survey

  1. In your workspace, click the purple + button in the top bar and choose Create. You can also click Create survey at the top right of the survey list. Both do the same thing.

  2. The survey opens in the editor as Untitled survey. It already contains a welcome screen, a question group called My first question group with one sample question, and an end screen. Click any element to edit it.

  3. Click the survey title in the top bar, type your own title and press Enter. The Saved at stamp next to the title tells you the change is stored.

  4. Set the basics. Click the gear icon in the left toolbar to open Settings, then General. Here you choose the survey languages and the base language, the survey owner, the administrator name and email address, the bounce email address, the survey group, the format (how questions are spread over pages) and the theme.

Tip: The first time you open the editor, a short interactive tour walks you through the editorial area, the survey title, adding questions and the theme options. You can start it again at any time from the three-dot menu at the top right, under Interactive help.

Tip: You do not need to save. The editor saves every change on its own. If you close the browser, you continue where you left off.

Other ways to start a survey

The + menu has two more options:

  • Copy makes a new survey from one you already have, including its questions and settings. See Copy a survey.
  • Import creates a survey from a survey file, for example one exported from another LimeSurvey site. See Import a survey.

Where do I enter the title, base language and survey group? The form is gone.

The survey is created first and configured afterwards. Click the title in the top bar to rename it. Base language, survey group and administrator are in Settings > General (gear icon in the left toolbar).

I see a different, older-looking editor.

LimeSurvey 7 opens the new editor by default. The classic editor is still available for a few features that are not yet in the new one. See Upgrading to LimeSurvey 7: FAQ for what each editor covers.
