About Multiple choice

Multiple choice shows a list of checkboxes, and participants tick every option that applies. Each option is a subquestion. Use it for questions like "Which devices do you use?" where more than one answer can be true.

Add a Multiple choice question

  1. Click the purple + in the top bar. The question type picker opens.

  2. Under Multiple choice, click Multiple choice. The question appears at the end of the current question group.

  3. Click Your question here and type your question.

  4. Click the first subquestion and type the option. Add subquestion below the last row adds another one. The red x removes a row, the handle next to it moves it.

Settings that matter

Select the question to open its settings on the right.

  • Minimum answers and Maximum answers (Advanced > Logic): require at least or at most a number of ticks, for example "pick up to three".
  • Exclusive option (Advanced > Logic): enter the code of an option such as "None of these". Ticking it clears all other options.
  • Other (Advanced > General): adds an Other: option with a text field.
  • Subquestions order (Advanced > Display): shows the options in random order.
  • Display columns (Advanced > Display): spreads long lists over several columns.
  • Array filter (Advanced > Logic): shows only the options a participant ticked in an earlier multiple choice question with the same subquestion codes. Enter the code of that question.

How the answers are stored

Every option is stored on its own, for example Q009_SQ001, Q009_SQ002 for a question with the code Q009. A ticked option stores Y, an unticked one stays empty. In the export, each option is a column.

FAQ

How do I add a "None of these" option that clears the others?

Add "None of these" as the last subquestion, turn on Question codes under View in the ... menu to see its code, for example SQ005, and enter that code in Exclusive option.

Why does the export show Y and empty cells?

Each option is a column: Y means ticked, empty means not ticked. The export page can convert Y to 1. See Export your responses.
