About Numerical input

Numerical input asks for one number: an age, a count, an amount, a number of hours. Participants can only enter numbers, so the answers are ready for calculations. For several numbers in one question, use Multiple numerical input.

Participants see the tip Only numbers may be entered in this field.

Add a Numerical input question

1. Click the purple + in the top bar. The question type picker opens.

2. Under Number, click Numerical input. The question appears at the end of the current question group.

3. Click Your question here and type your question.

Settings that matter

Select the question to open its settings on the right. The limits are under Advanced > Input.

• Minimum value and Maximum value: the range participants can enter, for example 0 to 120 for an age.
• Integer only: accepts whole numbers only.
• Answer prefix and Answer suffix (Advanced > Display): a unit next to the field, for example "€" before or "kg" after it.
• Placeholder answer (Advanced > Display): a grey example in the empty field.

How the answers are stored

The answer is stored as a number. You can use it right away in conditions and equations, for example Q023 > 10 for a question with the code Q023.

FAQ

Why can participants not type a decimal number?

Check Integer only under Advanced > Input: when it is on, only whole numbers are accepted. Whether decimals use a dot or a comma is set for the whole survey with the decimal mark under Presentation > Presentation.

Should I use Short text with Numbers only instead?

Not if you want to calculate with the answer. Numerical input stores a number and checks the range. Short text with Numbers only works better for codes made of digits, such as a postal code that can start with 0.
