About domain aliases

Your survey site has an address like yourname.limesurvey.net. Some participants hesitate when a link from your website or invitation takes them to a domain they don't know. With a domain alias, your survey site also answers under your own domain, for example survey.example.com, and participants see only that domain in the address bar.

Set up a domain alias

1. At the provider where you manage your domain, open the DNS settings. Create a CNAME record for the name you want, for example survey.example.com, that points to the address of your survey site, for example yourname.limesurvey.net.
2. Log in at account.limesurvey.org.
3. On the Account details tab, under Your survey site, click the edit button next to Domain alias.
4. Enter the domain without https://, for example survey.example.com, and save.

Once the DNS record works, we create an SSL certificate for the alias with Let's Encrypt automatically. If that fails because the DNS record wasn't ready, save the alias again to retry.

Note: An alias must be a whole domain name, such as survey.example.com or example.com. Paths such as example.com/survey don't work. In most cases, a subdomain is the best choice.

Use the alias in invitation emails

To send invitations and reminders with links on your alias, log in to your survey site through the alias before you send them, for example at https://survey.example.com/admin.

What is the difference between the site name and a domain alias?

The site name is the first part of yourname.limesurvey.net; you change it on your account page. The Expert plan adds a white-label domain without the LimeSurvey name. A domain alias puts your survey site on your own domain. See How do I change my survey site domain?.

The alias shows a certificate warning. What do I do?

Check that the CNAME record points to your survey site, wait until the DNS change is active, and save the alias again on the Account details tab.
