About Array (Texts)

Array (Texts) is a grid of text fields. Rows and columns are both subquestions, and participants type into every cell. Use it when you need short texts for combinations of two things, for example one word per product and moment, or a name per role and team.

Add an Array (Texts) question

1. Click the purple + in the top bar. The question type picker opens.

2. Under Array, click Array (Texts). The question appears at the end of the current question group.

3. Click Your question here and type your question.

4. Click each row and type its label. The purple + bar below the last row adds a row.

5. Click each column heading and type its label. The purple + column at the right adds a column.

Settings that matter

Select the question to open its settings on the right.

• Max characters (Simple tab): limits the length of every cell.
• Show grand total and Show totals for (Advanced > Other): add totals of the cells for rows, columns or both, for grids with numbers.
• Input validation (Advanced > General): checks every cell against a pattern. See Validation.
• Placeholder answer (Advanced > Display): a grey example in the empty cells.

How the answers are stored

Every cell is stored on its own, as the combination of its row and its column, for example Q027_SQ001_SQ003 for the first row and the first column of a question with the code Q027. In the export, each cell is a column.

FAQ

Can participants leave cells empty?

Yes, as long as Mandatory is off. Tell participants in the help text which cells matter most.

How many cells should the grid have?

Keep it small. Every cell is a text field to fill in, and a grid of three by three already means nine answers.
