About Multiple choice with comments

Multiple choice with comments shows a checkbox and a text field for every option. Participants tick what applies and explain each choice in their own words. Use it when you need the reason behind every ticked option, for example which features someone uses and why.

Add a Multiple choice with comments question

1. Click the purple + in the top bar. The question type picker opens.

2. Under Multiple choice, click Multiple choice with comments. The question appears at the end of the current question group.

3. Click Your question here and type your question.

4. Click the first subquestion and type the option. Add subquestion below the last row adds another one. Every option gets its comment field automatically.

Settings that matter

Select the question to open its settings on the right.

• Comment only when (Simple tab and Advanced > Logic): decides when a comment is allowed. By default comments belong to ticked options only, and participants see the tip Comment only when you choose an answer.
• Remove text or uncheck checkbox automatically (Advanced > Logic): on by default. Typing a comment ticks its option, and unticking an option clears its comment.
• Minimum answers and Maximum answers (Advanced > Logic): require at least or at most a number of ticks.
• Text input box width (Advanced > Display): makes the comment fields wider or narrower.

How the answers are stored

Every option stores two values: the tick (Y or empty) and the comment. For a question with the code Q010, the first option is Q010_SQ001 and its comment Q010_SQ001comment. In the export, each of them is a column.

FAQ

Can I ask for one comment for the whole question instead?

Yes. Use Multiple choice and add a Long text question after it.

Why does an option get ticked when a participant types a comment?

With the default settings, comments belong to ticked options, and Remove text or uncheck checkbox automatically ticks the option for them. Unticking the option clears the comment again.
