Array (Point choice) asks several sub-questions that all share the same answer scale — one row per sub-question, one column per answer option. It is the array you want when you would otherwise ask the same rating question over and over.
You write the answer options yourself, so you decide how many points the scale has. In older LimeSurvey versions this meant picking between fixed Array (5 point choice) and Array (10 point choice) types; Array (Point choice) replaces both.
Add the question
- Click the + button in the top bar.
- Under Array, choose Array (Point choice).
The question is added to your survey and opens ready to edit.
Fill it in
Click the question to edit it. Everything is typed straight onto the question — there is no Save button; each change autosaves.
- Type your question where it says Your question here.
- Click each Answer option across the top and type your scale — for example Poor and Excellent, or 1 to 5.
- Click each Subquestion down the side and type the things you are asking about — for example Customer support and Value for money.
To build the grid out:
- The + on the right adds another answer option (another column).
- The + underneath adds another sub-question (another row).
- The red x removes an answer option or a sub-question.
- The drag handle next to each one reorders it.
A No answer column is added automatically when the question is not mandatory, so participants can decline a row.
Click anywhere outside the question to leave edit mode and see it exactly as your participants will.
Settings worth knowing
Open Question settings beside the question and switch to the Advanced tab for:
- Question code — the short name used in logic and exports.
- Type — change the question to a different type without rebuilding it.
- Mandatory — On, Soft (asks, but lets them continue), or Off.
- Show in statistics — how this question is charted in your results.
Other array types
- Array (Texts) — a grid of text boxes, with sub-questions on both axes.
- Array (Numbers) — a grid of numbered dropdowns, with sub-questions on both axes.
- Array by column — the same as this one, with the axes swapped.
- Array dual scale — two separate answer scales for each sub-question.
